Abstract

NDT of rough surfaces by means of surface waves is complicated because of scattering of surface waves. Experimental investigations for comparison of usage of transversal surface waves (TSW) and longitudinal surface waves (LSW) showed that because of a strong interaction of rough surface with TSW and because of transmission of LSW in the subsurface layer the attenuation of LSW in regular surface structures may be smaller than attenuation of TSW. This means that in investigations of rough, corroded, screw surfaces the LSW may be more useful than TSW. Investigations carried out using LSW in duralumin specimen deny the known theoretical conclusions that LSW can exist in solid bodies the Poisson's ratio of which is smaller than 0.26.
